Gut Two's Review of Smash Burger 1825 22nd Street, West Des Moines, IA
This new restaurant caught my eye as GutOne and I drove by on 22nd Street in West Des Moines. Located in the shopping plaza near the Earl May and the Block Buster Video, Smash Burger just opened on Wednesday,September 16th. I for one do not like to order a hamburger at a restaurant. I am always disappointed since I usually can make a better burger at home. Smash Burgers was really good. I ordered the Iowa SmashBurger, veggie frites, and a strawberry Haagen Daaz Shake. The Iowa Smashburger is a combination of Maytage blue cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo and haystack onion rings. The burger could of done without the blue cheese. I could tell that the burger itself was fighting a hard battle to be flavorful on its own without the help of the blue cheese. The veggie frites were awesome. They fried carrots, green beans and asparagus and tossed them in a tasty seasoning. Kids who don't like veggies listen up you will like these. Their is no excuse now to not eat your veggies. Especially since I hate and I do mean hate cook carrots but they way Smash Burger prepares them is so yummy. The shake was the only let down of the whole meal. I am not a Haggen Daaz fan so that explain the lack of flavor on the shake. If you want a good shake then Fudruckers and Steak and Shake are still your best bet. I would like to say to Smashburger that I did enjoy their food and plan to come back and try a Gut 2 special (chicken, with American cheese, onion, tomato, and bacon), tasty.
Gut One's Review of Smash Burger
After my Bears won their game GutTwo and I were hungry for something new. She recommended we go try the new Smashburger joint that opened up on 22nd Street in West Des Moines. I'm all for new things, so I agreed and off we went. The first impression of the store was that it was trying for that cool sleek look. Stainless steel everywhere and three big words in red (Smash, Sizzle, Savor). Being a modern cool sleek gut, I felt immediately at home. As with most new places, I ordered the simplest thing on the menu, the Classic Smashburger. I also added on some of the Smashfries to give them a try. The burger was delivered five minutes after we sat down. Presentation wise it was quite nice, with the fries in a separate wire basket, and the burger in a small rectangular wire basket. All the veggies looked fresh and the burger itself was prepared medium well. Overall I found it to be quite good. My biggest complaint would be the price, as the burger plus fries and drink came out to be $10. If a place is going to have $6 dollar burgers, then I think it should serve basic fries with them, instead of requiring the patron to pay extra to add them as a side dish. In the end I plan on going back again, which should really be the goal of any eating establishment.
